One Day Tour

There is another Heraklion beneath the one most visitors see.

Beyond the busy streets, museums and famous archaeological sites lies an older landscape, a landscape of rivers, caves, mountains, temples, sacred springs, priestesses and ancient pathways where people came to pray, give thanks, seek protection and connect with the Divine.

On this one-day journey, we leave the familiar tourist paths and enter the sacred landscape of ancient Crete.

We will explore the ancient world around the port of Knossos, Amnisos, and the sacred space associated with the Amnesiades nymphs, priestesses of Artemis and assistants of Goddess of childbirth, Eileithyia, and then journey toward the sacred mountain of Yuchtas (Juktas), one of the most important spiritual landscapes of Minoan Crete and home to the beautiful picturesque and cultural village of Archanes.

Along the way, we will visit archaeological and natural sites, share traditional Cretan food in a beautiful village taverna, and create moments to slow down, listen and experience the land for ourselves.

This is not simply a tour of ancient sites.

It is an invitation to experience Crete as a living sacred landscape - and to weave its ancient stories into your own inner journey.

The Amnisiades Nymphs

Our journey begins in the area of Amnisos, the ancient port of Knossos, a landscape that was deeply connected with the sacred traditions of Minoan and later Greek Crete.

In antiquity, this area was associated with the river Amnisos, the Amnesiades nymphs and the worship of Artemis and Eileithyia.

The landscape of river, sea, forest and caves formed a natural sacred world, a place where nature and the Divine were not separate.

We may begin our day at Amnisiades Park, where we can enjoy a tea or coffee together and introduce the journey ahead - the mythology, history and philosophy that will intertwine with our inner and outer journey in a process of sacred soul weaving.

Depending on the season, or the flow of the day, we may instead choose another beautiful place to begin, or meet directly at your hotel.

Before the journey, we will decide together what feels most appropriate.

In this way, we enter the landscape slowly, learning about the mythology, history and spiritual traditions connected with the area.

The Ancient Port & Sanctuary of Zeus Thenatas

We then continue toward the ancient port of Amnisos and the sanctuary of Zeus Thenatas.
Imagine arriving in Crete by sea thousands of years ago.

Before continuing your journey inland, you encounter the sacred landscape of the island and make an offering of gratitude for your safe arrival.

This gives us an opportunity to explore an ancient question that remains surprisingly relevant:

How do we honour the journeys that have brought us to where we are?

The sanctuary becomes a place to reflect on arrival, protection, gratitude and the transitions in our own lives.

It is also according to myth the spot where the umbilical cord of Zeus fell from the skies while his Mother Titanness Rhea flew him from the cave he was born in Dikti, to the cave he grew up, in sacred Idi.
Together we will explore the site energetically and visit some other parts of the area, forgotten by time, but not space.

The Cave of Eileithyia

One of the most powerful places we will have the opportunity to visit is the ancient Cave of Eileithyia, the goddess associated with childbirth and the mysteries of conception, pregnancy, and birth.

In antiquity, the cave was connected with women seeking help with all of the above.

Here we explore the story of Eileithyia and her connections with Hera and Artemis, and the journey of the soul towards incarnation. We will discover how the ancient Greeks understood birth not simply as a physical event, but as a profound threshold between worlds.
We will have time to be quiet in this ancient sacred space.

Through meditation, reflection and simple experiential practices, you will be invited to connect with the archetype of the Goddess and explore what birth, renewal and new beginnings might mean in your own life. The cave is also a representation of our subconscious, of what lies under the surface, and an offering will be given to allow for a softening, and a cleanse.

You do not need to believe anything in particular.

Simply allow yourself to experience the place.

Yuchtas - The Sacred Mountain of Heraklion

From the coast, we travel inland toward Yuchtas (Juktas), the distinctive sacred mountain rising above the landscape of central Crete.
For the Minoans, mountains were places of profound sacred significance.

Yuchtas is associated with a remarkable concentration of Minoan sacred sites, including a Minoan peak sanctuary where rituals and offerings took place high above the surrounding landscape.

As we ascend into this landscape, the experience changes.

The view opens.

The horizon expands.

And we begin to understand why mountains have held such importance in the spiritual traditions of Crete and the wider Mediterranean. The peak represents the higher view, like that of an eagle, Zeus’ sacred bird, and they are places of energetic concentration, as the earth energy “peaks” in the form of a mountain or hill top.

Depending on the weather and guests’ capacity, we may reach the peak, go close to it, or simply look at it from a certain spot that is appropriate.
The intention will then be to experience the heightened energy of this peak in order to awaken our inner antennas of connecting to the divine cosmic knowledge and wisdom that is always available, as long as we listen to our inner ear.

Fourni - The Necropolis where ancestors were worshipped

We may also visit the remarkable area of Fourni, where we will walk an easy path for 15 minutes and experience the energy of this area, empowered by the ancestors.

Fourni is an extraordinary archaeological landscape associated with the ancient settlement and cemetery of Archanes, with a long history reaching back into the Minoan period.

We can spend time in the surrounding landscape, connecting with the area, taking in the mountain and valley, and allowing ourselves to experience the atmosphere of this ancient place.

For us, a sacred journey is not dependent entirely on whether we can cross an archaeological entrance, since the site of Fourni is not always open.

The Village, the Table & the Taste of Crete

And then there is something equally important:

food.

Ancient and modern Crete meet beautifully around the Cretan table.

During our journey, we will stop in a traditional village and enjoy a meal at one of the local tavernas, where we can experience authentic Cretan hospitality and the simple pleasure of sharing food together.

Fresh local ingredients, traditional dishes, wine, conversation and the atmosphere of village life become another part of the journey.

Because spirituality is not only found in caves and sanctuaries.

It can also be found around a table.

In laughter.

In good food.

In friendship.

In the generosity of sharing a meal.

Mythology as a Mirror

Throughout the day, we weave together Greek mythology, Minoan history, archaeology, philosophy, sacred landscape and experiential practices.

The purpose is not simply to learn what people believed thousands of years ago.

How do they still speak to something within us today?

Eileithyia can become a doorway into birth and renewal.

Artemis into independence, nature and the wild aspect of the psyche.

Zeus is the higher mind, the mind of God, who sees everything from a higher perspective, independent of emotionality.

The sacred mountain invites us into ascent and empowerment, into achievement and perseverance.

And the ancient landscape itself is an invitation to slow down, listen, and simply be.

You are not asked to adopt an ancient belief system.

Instead, you are invited to discover what these places and stories awaken in you.
